Discover the creativity of Africa in Timbuktu
LITERATURE
Our books will draw your attention to authors who have made significant contributions to world literature which are well worth reading. In addition to novels, stories, guidebooks and volumes of art and poetry, we also stock comprehensive academic literature on many countries and topics from the African world.
Our own publishing house, BOOKS ON AFRICAN STUDIES, seeks out and publishes works set in and about Africa which we want to help gain wider recognition and acclaim.
From May 2000, you can become a member of the Forum für afrikanische Kultur e.V., a society which has set itself the goal of literary dialogue and exchange of arts with Africa.
MUSIC
We stock a wide range of CDs, records and cassettes representing the various trends in African music. If you are interested in musical instruments, Timbuktu is the place for you: we will be more than happy to show you our traditional, handmade drums and percussion instruments.
HANDICRAFTS
(utensils, masks, figures, statuettes, jewellery... etc.)
We stock a large number of handmade pieces representing both traditional forms and more recent developments in African art.
ART
We are also committed to exchanging art with Africa and organize several exhibitions of classical and modern art from Africa each year. We are also often contacted by galleries and institutions wishing to cooperate with us on projects or exhibitions.
ACCESSORIES FOR THE HOME
Our Akan stools are carved from Sese wood by Ghanaian expert craftsmen following long-standing traditions, whereas other pieces of furniture, such as rattan chairs, wrought-iron tables and sofa frames, represent modern African interior design. Another tip: our textiles, bedspreads and rugs bring the colours of Africa into your home.
EVENTS
We would also like to encourage you to spend time reflecting on and speaking about Africa: several times each year, we organize readings, discussion rounds or exhibitions which help you make new discoveries and bring you a step closer to Africa, whether this is through music, literature, art or politics. We look forward to seeing you in Timbuktu soon.
